According to a state- ent from Avera Medical roup, studies show that eople who are screened have a 90 percent reduced risk of developing colon cancer. Yet nationwide, only a bout 50 percent of people who are eligible take advan- age of regular screenings. Colorectal cancer causes 50,000 deaths per year nationwide.

For men and omen alike, colorectal cancer is the third most revalent cancer and third leading cause of cancer eaths. One in 20 will be af- fected by colorectal cancer within their lifetime. Colon screenings are recommended beginning at age 50. Colorectal cancer peaks at age 60, so colorec- al screening should begin 1 0 years earlier, when doc- ors can spot and remove olyps that might eventual- become cancerous. Finding and removing precance- rous polyps virtually eliminates the potential for cancer.

Acolonoscopy is needed only every 10 years, or more often if polyps are detected. Earlier screening is recommended for African Americ ans or for those with a family history of colorectal cancer.
