KING Associated Press Staff Writer New Castle, N. June 15 (JP) Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York is the best bet to win the Republican presidential nomination in the opinion of most of the Republican governors attending a na tional conference here. An informal poll by the Christian Science Monitor and the The Associated Press of 15 Republican governors as to whom they thought would win the party nomination showed this: Dewey, seven; Sen.

Arthur Vandenberg of Michigan, two; Sen. Robert A. Taft of Ohio, one; Harold E. Stassen, former governor of Minnesota, one. 3 Decline Opinion Three governors of so-called "key" states refused to voice an anonymous opinion.

One sidestepped the question by saying he thought it would be a deadlock and that he had no idea which way the tide --would turn. Among the Democrats, the general feeling was that Pres. Truman would win renomination. But one southern governor said he thought Gen. Eisenhower has an "outside chance." With the Republican convention less than a week away, the Republican governors were hesitant about making predictions.

Most of them did so with the understanding: "My name will be withheld; "This is a prediction rather than necessarily a preference." The general opinion among Republican chief executives attending the national governors conference was that Dewey was out in front but they all emphasized that they were speaking of his position today. Several expressed the belief that Dewey had gained considerable strength within recent weeks. One governor said privately "and don't quote me" he thought Vandenberg would be the G. O. P.

presidential nominee three weeks ago. Now he thinks it will be Dewey. Candidates Not Polled Both Dewey and Gov. Earl Warren of California two of the four announced candidates for the Re publican presidential nomination- are attending the conference here, but the two naturally were not questioned in the AP-Christian Science Monitor poll. Democratic governor here seem to lean toward the conviction that Vandenberg would eventually be tne choice for the O.

P. presidential nomination. One from the midwest said he was sure it would be Taft. Swanky Sunfrock Glamour-girl stuff!
